Light banquets Campaign

FOE-LightBanquetsCampaign

Aims of the Campaign:

FoE (HK) has launched the “Order Less Waste Less” Spring Reception campaign since 2010 to promote the ideal green menu of reducing two courses from the traditional eight to ten courses. It was supported by the Hong Kong Government together with numerous corporations and organizations in the last 2 years.

Ride on the initial success we will launch our “Order Less Waste Less, More Blessings – Light Banquets Campaign” again and emphasize the message of “Cherishing Food”. We therefore would like to invite more corporations to support our campaign by actively reducing food waste at source.

Campaign Details:

Action Menu:

Action Code Details Expected Outcome
Quality instead of Quantity Reduce at least 2 courses at banquets and to order an appropriate amount of food. For every reduction of 2 dishes, 3.8kg of food waste can be saved from ending up in landfills.
Take away the leftovers Encourage all guests to bring their own reusable boxes to take home any leftover food to enjoy later. Result in ZERO food wastage in banquets.

Campaign Background

Approximately 1 billion people are starving every day in the world. Ironically, the daily volume of our food waste going into landfills is approx. 3,600 tonnes, which represents 40% of the city’s municipal solid waste. The commercial sector has indeed generated twice as much waste in 2011 as compared to that of 2002.

Friends of the Earth (HK) has conducted a survey in 2010 and found that the food waste from 104 evening banquet tables can equate to 400kg, which is enough to feed people from 20 banquet tables. Have we forgotten about the good Chinese culture of treasuring every single piece of rice?

“World Food Day (WFD)” occurs in every October 16th. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will make use of the WFD to remind the world population to cherish food. Every year, Friends of the Earth (HK) launches a series of “waste no food” programmes to echo WFD. We hope by joining hands with the public, corporate and school sectors, food waste could be largely reduced at source.
