未來食物 Future Food?

今天,人們面對著食品價格上漲、人口增長和環境變化(如氣候變化)等問題,全球糧食供應正面臨鉅大考驗。這促使專家們、科學家們、還有相關組織和未來學家努力尋找解決問題的方法,著手研究我們的「未來食物」。

「未來食物」一: 昆蟲。建議,昆蟲的養殖成本遠低於飼養牛隻。荷蘭科學家的研究指出,昆蟲包含與肉類相同的營養價值,並含豐富的蛋白質。現時己有不少國家將昆蟲烹調美味佳餚。

「未來食物」二:利用聲波改變食物的味道。有研究指出,食物的味道會隨著味覺、嗅覺、甚至聽覺而改變;進食時聽著不同的聲音會改變食物的味道,比如說,人們聽著海浪聲進食會覺得食物比較新鮮。然而,食物和聲音的關係暫時只屬研究課題,還有待專家找出當中的關係。

「未來食物」三:人造肉。荷蘭的科學家們正在進行「人造肉」的研究,嘗試在實驗室製造「肉 」,並已成功製造出第一個「人造肉漢堡包」。 牛津大學的一項研究發現,從實驗室培殖出來的「肉 」與透過傳統屠宰動物而獲取的肉相比,其溫室氣體排放、能源和水的使用均顯著較低。但由於「人造肉」 尚未被測試,目前很難說明它會否成為全球糧食需求不斷增加 下而衍生的「未來食物」。

「未來食物」四:海藻。雖然海藻是食物鏈架構中屬最低層,但它們有助於解決糧食短缺的問題。 一些可持續發展食品行業更預測藻類養殖可以成為世界上最大的種植業。 海藻可能是很好的糧食來源,然而,專家們還未全面研究其所有用途。

很難想像二十年、三十年後的「未來食物」會是什麼樣,就讓我們拭目以待⋯⋯

Because of the rising food prices, growing population and environmental issues like climate change, experts, scientists, organizations and futurologist are dealing with the problem of how and what we are going to eat in the future.

It is proposed that insects cost less than raising cattle and according to scientists in a researching facility in the Netherlands, they contain the same nutritional value of meat and is also a good source of protein. Countries across the globe have already started to consume and include insects in some of their delicacies.

Sonic-enhanced food, food whose taste has been altered to fit our taste has also been proposed. It has been found that taste can be adjusted by changing the sonic of a background track. The relationship of food and sound is still a researching topic as experts are not yet sure what exactly happens in the brain to trigger the outcome.

Dutch scientists were able to grown “lab-grown” meat or “cultured meat” and produced the first “test-tube” burger. A study by “Oxford University found growing meat in a lab rather than slaughtering animals would significantly reduce greenhouse gases, along with energy and water use.” But because it is not yet commonly used nor tested, it would be difficult to make it a source of production in the future with the increasing demand for food.

Despite being under the food chain, Algae helps solve the problem of food shortages. “Some in the sustainable food industry predict algae farming could become the world’s biggest cropping industry.” Algae’s are good sources; however, experts have not yet done sufficient research to find out all its uses.

So, wait and see what we are really going to have in the future…

沒有蜜蜂下的超級市場⋯⋯How our supermarkets would look like if all the bees died off?

也許很多人都聽說過蜜蜂的重要性,但蜜蜂數量下降是事實,這個事實近年來更成為科學家們的研究焦點。

也許你會認為蜜蜂數量持續下降與你無關, 但實情是,蜜蜂在農業生產中擔當著很重要的角色,這更是直接影響到我們的食物供應。

透過蜜蜂傳播花粉,農作物得以繁殖生長,然後才有我們常吃的到的蔬菜水果。假如蜜蜂數量持續下降, 很多食物的供應會受到影響,特別是新鮮的食物。

為了讓人們意識到蜜蜂在食物生產活動中的重要性,美國 University Heights Whole Foods Market 做了一個小實驗,就是從貨架上取下那些依賴蜜蜂傳播花粉生產的食物(下圖):

Many people may now know the importance of bees; however, they are currently the centre of attention of scientists and companies because of the decline in their population. You may think that it doesn’t concern you if their numbers continue to drop right?  However, bees play an important part in agriculture, especially with the food you eat.

The plants that pollinates from honeybees help grow crops, fruits and vegetables. If their population continues to decrease, the fresh ingredients that many consumers relay on may not be sufficient and availability will be affected. So in order to provide the residents with the message that food production is crucial, the University Heights Whole Foods Market store removed products in the supermarkets and grocery stores that highly depend on bees and other pollinators in order to produce. 誰是蜜蜂殺手? Who Killed the Bees?

由於蜂窠及蜜蜂數量下降,大大增加蜜蜂的「工作量」!就以加州為例,加州出產的杏仁佔全國的杏仁供應的80﹪,但每種杏仁卻需要動員全國60﹪的蜂窠去傳播花粉!

就蜜蜂數量下降的情況,最近的科學研究又有令人震驚的新發現!

多年來,科學家們一直在尋找導致全美約10萬蜂箱蜂群衰竭失調(Colony Collapse Disorder – CCD)的原因。馬里蘭州大學和美國農業部的科學家們發現並有充分理據指出,被農藥污染的花粉就是問題所在。根據原文,「最令人不安的是,吃了被殺菌劑及農藥污染的花粉的蜜蜂,其感染的寄生蟲的機會比吃未無污染花粉的蜜蜂可多達三倍。」

蜜蜂殺手,就是受污染的花粉。

Because of the decrease in beehive population, in order to pollinate one California crop, almonds it would take 60% of the country’s beehive to do so. Worse, California almonds distributes to 80% of the country’s total almonds supply.

Based on research and new studies conducted by scientist, a shocking new discovery has been found regarding the decline and drop in population of bee that pollinate $30 billion of USA’s crops.

Over the years, scientists have been finding the cause of CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) that affected and killed an estimated 10 million beehives across the country. Scientists at the University of Maryland and the US Department of Agriculture have been able to pinpoint the problem to a pesticide that are contaminating the pollens that bees collect. According to the article, “Most disturbing, bees that ate pollen contaminated with fungicides were three times as likely to be infected by the parasite.”
